The diorama shows a fictional "room" in dependence on the paintings of the famous Belgian surrealist René Magritte in which he often presented proportions upside down. Elements frequently used by him were rooms, wood paneling, skies, windows, easels and many other items and props. In at least two paintings he showed an apple in a room which filled the space between bottom and ceiling. I tried to empathize his world in this diorama of which I made all in all four pieces in certain variations.
In one of his most famous paintings showing a pipe Magritte gave it the title "Ceci n'est pas une pipe" (this is not a pipe). What he wanted to express was that although the painting showed a pipe it was not a real but just a painted pipe. This led me to my title "Ceci n'est pas une chambre" (this is not a room) for my diorama. In my other variations on this theme I replaced the small reproductions of Magritte's paintings within the picture frames and the window, the apple by a cannon and a small table with a cannon on top and one of the small paintings on the lateral wall by a real stone. The latter variation was in following of Magritte's painting "The Pyrenees Castle" in which a solid rock is hovering in the sky. I will keep on working on this theme and stage further Magritte paintings and other painters' work while also incorporating own ideas and elements.
