A mysterious Smile...
The conceptual world of the Mesolithic hunter-gatherers is the most ephemeral aspect of their lives. It was expressed in decorations, images on objects, burials and rituals. Just like this small human figure.
It was found in 1966 during construction work on the Volkerak locks at Willemstad,The Netherlands, eight metres below sea level. The figurine lay between the roots of a oak tree on a steep sandy ridge at the edge of the wet Delta. C14 analysis revealed that the oak figurine dates from 5300 BC. With its large eyes, cheekbones, nose and open mouth, the head appears to be depicted naturalistically.
The body somewhat resembles a handle.
We are completely in the dark as to the significance of the ‘Willemstad man’.
Ethnographic research has shown the importance of shamans in hunter-gatherer communities. They used all kinds of objects to contact the spiritual world. Was this figurine held while performing ritual acts? Will it remain a mystery...
