This is the original 'Outdoor' Shooting miniature we used in filming The Lord of the Rings movies in Wellington New Zealand, for which I was on-set supervisor for our roughly 7 month shoot. The main elements were constructed across the road at Weta Workshop, supervised my Mary McLachlan and John Baster. Orthanc Tower (middle)was sculpted in sections then cast in fiberglass from silicone moulds. The outer wall segments were similarly cast, but run in self-skinning polyurethane foam. The underground 'pits' (some up to 150cm deep) were each roughly pre-fabricated from cast polyurethane foam, then we used a backhoe to excavate and fit each one, before dressing in with a bazillion miles of tiny 'Orc-built' scaffolding and gangways. The 'Orange' stones scattered about are there for 'Digital Tracking' - to add lots of digital Orcs later on. Lastly, the pic marked "Warren's Cave-in" was where I accidentally buried my head & shoulders while hurriedly carving a new 'Tunnel' requested by Peter Jackson just before we shot the "Moth-Fly-over" scene.
