The tray is a standard white marble tray. The rocks have been identified as being petrified wood that is not fully petrified. This meant that the rock was still quite brittle and relatively easy to cut.
The view is meant to represent a far away view of mountains rising from the sea. For this reason the tray is usually kept with water in it.
